Welcome to our fundraising page!
This will be omy 6th year running and fundraising for the Strike Out ALS 5K. My dad is not able to make the run this year but my friend, Anya, will take his place. Please help us raise much needed funds to find a cure for this horrible disease.
While we are fortunate enough to not be personally affected by this disease, others are not so lucky. Each year runners bring family members who are fighting and seeing the toll this disease takes give us the motivation to keep running and pushing through (even when running in the July heat).
Three years ago we got to witness first hand the struggle this disease takes on a body. As my dad and I were enjoying the post-race party and having dinner and drinks (for about an hour after we finished) the announcer came on and said, "There is still one participant left on the course. He is an ALS patient and is making his way to the finish line. Let's all grab our drinks and go cheer him on!" EVERYONE went outside and started clapping and cheering and yelling his name, Derek, as he slowly made his way to the finish line. He was pushing a tricycle for stability and had another man helping him. Each step looked like it took an enormous amount of effort. The distance (less than than a tenth of a mile) that took most runners less than 30 seconds to complete, took this man 13 minutes!! But he did not give up! He took every last step until his foot hit the home plate of Old Comisky (the finish line). There was not a dry eye at that finish line. Seeing him push through that is the reason we do this race and raise money for this disease. Last year, Derek struggled to walk the 1 mile course. What an inspiration he was to us all!!
We are participating in the 2018 Strike Out ALS 5K this year because we believe in the work of the Les Turner ALS Foundation, we believe in providing the best possible care to Chicagoland area ALS patients and their families and we believe that the money we raise together will lead to finding the cure for ALS. Join us as we run towards more than a finish line, we run towards a CURE!
