Why I walk
I walk for life. I walk for my family, my friends and my wife. I walk for our kids, Regan (16) and Paddy (15) so they know we are not alone in this journey.
I walk to honor those that fought this disease before me, for those that are fighting today, and hope for those who get diagnosed in the future. I walk to support the Les Turner ALS Foundation for all the unbelievable support and services they provide. I walk for ALS awareness and to support research so that one day a cure can be found so that no families have to live with this disease. I walk for inspiration, to walk alongside those who fight every day for life and with those who have lost loved ones.
We started our journey in the fall of 2009. At first it affected my left arm, then my right arm and eventually to my legs so I can no longer walk on my own. Through the years we have found ways to adapt to the changes. I would not be able to overcome all of these challenges if it were not for my wife, Karen. Karen keeps me strong and pushes me to be my best. Without her selflessness, strength and caring, I would not be able to stay strong day in and day out. We continue to be as active as possible, taking advantage of opportunities to get out and about and enjoy life. We support our kid’s activities and I have had the fortunate opportunity to continue to coach the kid’s teams.
The Les Turner ALS Foundation has provided tremendous support over the years since we started at the clinic at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. With the support of the home and community services team, support group and other functions/events throughout the year we feel we can accomplish anything.
2015, was the first year we had the opportunity to participate in the walk. It was a beautiful and inspirational day. Although ALS has taken peoples abilities and loved ones, it has not taken our spirits. The positive energy and enthusiasm could be felt throughout the whole walk and day.
I walk for life. I walk for the future and hope for ALS.
