onWARD to a Cure
This year, our team, onWard to a Cure, will be back again participating in the 2020 ALS Walk for Life (virtual). We believe in the mission of the Les Turner ALS Foundation and we want to support all ALS patients and their families.
In March 2018, Marian Ward was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). It was devastating to all of us, but Marian does everything she can to continue living life to the best of her ability. Nothing is more important to her than her husband, Jim, her four children, James, Terry, Mark, and Grace, daughter in law, Kim, and granddaughter, Paige. Marian spent nearly 40 years as a nurse, mostly in home health care. She has been a dedicated parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Orland Park, and has taught Religious Education to the children and teens for over 25 years.
ALS is a progressive disease that causes muscle weakness, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Marian’s muscles continue to weaken, limiting her mobility and even the simplest tasks are difficult. Her lung capacity has also been affected, causing severe fatigue. The psychological affects of ALS are devastating, as fear of ones body continuing to deteriorate is inevitable. Marian works hard at staying positive and strengthening her faith. She treasures her time with family, friends, and in May attended a life changing pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, with a Catholic ministry, the Order of Malta, along with her husband, sister Jane, and son Terry.
Marian has benefitted greatly from the Les Turner Foundation. The support from a large team of health care professionals at Northwestern Hospital’s Neurology Department is more than comprehensive. She also receives regular home visits from a nurse and social worker. It is a wonderful organization that not only fights for a cure for ALS, but also helps improve the quality of life of ALS patients. Our family is grateful for their service and support.
